Do I really need to weight train?

Strength training has become increasingly vital over the last 40 years due to growing scientific recognition of its ability to counteract age-related loss of muscle and bone, support metabolic health, and prevent chronic diseases that became more prominent as life expectancy and sedentary lifestyles rose during this period. The aging population, changes in workplace environments, and advances in health research have all contributed to the broader emphasis on strength training as essential for long-term wellness and independence.

With so many different exercise modalities, it can be overwhelming to figure out what you really “need.” It is always important to add in types of activity you really enjoy to keep motivation. However, as we age, we are all at risk for sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is when we progressively lose muscle mass and function, which can lead to falls, functional decline, frailty, and possibly earlier mortality. It can begin as early as the age of 30!

So how can we slow this process down? Consistent weight training! This includes weight machines, dumbbells, barbells, cable machines, kettlebells, etc. Weight training also improves bone density, reduces chronic risk disease (such as cognitive dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, cancer and more). Our circuit and studio strength classes provide a wide variety of weight training, along with a fun community atmosphere!

While we all get older every day, we can all feel better mentally, physically, be less afraid of falling, and improve our memory with weight training. If there is anything specific you want to work on or learn when it comes to strength training, sign up for a few sessions with one of our personal trainers! You will get your questions answered, a personalized approach that we can’t give in group classes, and feel more confident using the equipment.

If you’re new to weight training, let me help you get started!  If you’ve plateaued with working out on your own and need professional direction to level up, come see me.  Wherever you are on your journey, I will meet you there and invite you to graciously allow me to help you feel and move better while adding on years to your life.
