Core Stability

A general foundation of Pilates is the emphasis on core stability to support overall movement of daily activities and performance.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a type of mind-body exercise developed in the early 20th century by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. Pilates is great for strengthening and toning, with a focus on your core, and for increasing your flexibility.

Some of the Health benefits of Pilates include increased muscle strength and tone, particularly of your core, including the abdominal muscles, lower back, hips, and buttocks, balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body, enhanced muscular control of your back and limbs, and improved stabilization of your spine.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Pilates is traditionally performed on a mat, leveraging your body weight as resistance. As Pilates evolved, a machine was developed that has a padded table that glides on rails, relying more on pulleys with leg or arm straps, to provide resistance with less strain on your body.  This type of machine is used in all Reformer Pilates classes.

Body Balance reformers are created with the best of science and movement together. Pilates builds strength, core stability, flexibility, and mental focus. It is one of the best modalities for improved strength and flexibility while offering low impact to the body.  With Pilates, quality of movement is stressed over quantity of movement. All of our instructors will encourage and teach proper technique, breath and alignment.

In a first Pilates Reformer group class, expect to receive an introduction to the equipment, move through a guided sequence of beginner exercises, and get familiar with the unique feel of the moving carriage.

Arrival and Orientation
•Arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in and meet the instructor, especially if it’s the first time at the studio.
•The instructor will introduce the Reformer, explaining key features like the footbar, straps, springs, and moving carriage.
•Expect a rundown of class etiquette, safety guidelines, and what props (such as small balls, rings, or boxes) may be used.

What Happens During Class
•The class usually starts with a gentle warm-up, often lying on the back while doing footwork using the bar in various positions—heels, arches, toes, feet together, and apart.
•The instructor carefully demonstrates exercises and helps you set resistance levels using springs, adjusting for personal comfort and ability.
•Exercises target different areas, mixing core, arms, and legs, and may involve both slow, controlled movements and stretching.
•Throughout, emphasis is placed on breathwork, control, form, and connecting mind with movement—not on intensity or speed.
•The session often ends with cooling-down stretches, sometimes with feet in the straps, and a short period for questions or clarification.

Preparation and Tips
•Wear form-fitting, comfortable clothes, and bring grip socks if required by the studio. NOTE: we have grip socks available for purchase in studio.
•Bring a water bottle.  Small towels are provided complimentary to you in studio—expect to break a sweat, even though the movements are controlled.
•Don’t hesitate to ask questions or request clarification about exercises or equipment adjustments.

Overall Experience
•Expect to learn more about body alignment, core activation, and controlled movement than in typical fitness classes.
•The class is beginner-friendly: instructors and classmates are usually supportive, and everyone moves at their own pace.
•After class, it’s normal to feel muscles activated you may not have felt before, along with a sense of accomplishment.
There are numerous benefits to using a reformer in your regular workout routing.  Most notably, these include:
- Enhanced core strength and stability: Reformer exercises target deep abdominal muscles, improving posture and supporting spine health.
- Increased flexibility and mobility: Dynamic stretches and the adjustable resistance of the reformer allow participants to experience greater range of motion in joints and muscles.
- Improved muscle tone and definition: The springs and pulleys of the reformer engage multiple muscle groups, producing leaner, more defined physiques over time.
- Low-impact exercise: Movements on the reformer are smooth and controlled, reducing stress on joints, and making classes suitable for all ages and fitness levels, including those recovering from injury.
- Full-body workout: Sessions incorporate strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility exercises for comprehensive fitness

The simple answer is YES!  More specifically, some of the benefits of working out in a group class are:

•Mind-body connection: Group reformer classes demand focus and precision, enhancing mindfulness, body awareness, and coordination.
•Stress relief and mood improvement: Concentrated breath work, rhythmic movements, and mindful exercise help reduce stress and anxiety, fostering a positive mood.
•Motivation and accountability: Exercising in a group setting encourages regular attendance, fosters a sense of community, and provides mutual support among participants

Yoga can help deepen your meditation practice and connection to your higher self, build physical and mental strength, and improve your flexibility and balance. Pilates can be suitable for recovering from an injury, improving your posture, and building core strength. Both involve linking breath with movement and a mind-body connection. There’s no better…or, right or wrong. Variety is great and simply getting and staying active is the key!

  • Enhanced core strength: Pilates focuses deeply on core stability, which complements yoga’s holistic body engagement and improves the effectiveness of strength exercises.
  • Increased flexibility and mobility: Pilates muscle-toning supports the flexibility developed in yoga, reducing injury risk and improving athletic performance in strength training.
  • Better balance and coordination: Both Pilates and yoga require control and precise movement, enhancing overall balance and reducing fall and injury risk.
  • Improved posture: Regular Pilates practice refines postural awareness and strengthens supporting muscles, adding long-term benefit to both yoga poses and strength routines.
  • Stress reduction and mental clarity: The mindful movement and breathwork in Pilates blend well with the calming, meditative techniques from yoga, supporting mental wellness and focus during strength workouts.
Reformer Pilates has surged in popularity recently due to its ability to offer a full-body, low-impact workout that appeals to a broad range of people, from beginners to athletes, and addresses both physical and mental wellness.

Reformer Pilates Will Strengthen You From Head to Toe.

What Is Our Brand of Pilates?

It’s simple, stick to the basics of why Pilates started! Pilates is used heavily in Physical Therapy because it’s tried and true. When properly taught, we can hone in on very specific muscle groups and target both primary and supporting muscles to improve flexibility and strength in ways that other modalities just can’t quite do. You won’t see us mixing in heavy weights, cranking up the tunes for high-tempo moves or asking students to try some obscure positioning. Although these aspects may add variety, they also increase the potential for injury, which is counterproductive! So, simply put…stretch, strengthen and tone!

All of our reformer classes are small-group (e.g. 2-4 students), which ensures our teachers can provide the personal attention needed to each student attending.
