What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that combines the body, breath, spirit, and mind to improve overall health and wellbeing. It originated about 5,000 years ago as a spiritual practice for upper-caste men. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means “to yoke” or “to unite”. All terms, including postures, originate from this ancient language. The four yogic paths include Raja yoga, Karma yoga, Bhakti yoga, and Jnana yoga. The most common motivations for most Western yoga practitioners to practice yoga are for exercise, to reduce stress, and to help manage pain. Yoga and its sister science, Ayurveda go hand-in-hand to promote this lifestyle.

Western Yoga Practices Include:

  • Physical postures – Also known as Asana, these postures are necessary to keep the body healthy, strong, and flexible.
  • Breathing techniques – Also known as Pranayama, these exercises help move energy in the body and unite it with the mind and spirit.
  • Meditation – Also known as Dhyana, this practice helps yogis experience states of freedom, peace, and introspection.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga

Yama (abstinences)

The principles that teach us how to treat others and the world around us.

Niyama (observances)

The standards by which we should practice self-discipline.

Asana (movement)

The practice of the yoga postures.

Pranayama (breath techniques)

Breath is the way we take in and interact with the subtle life force energy that surrounds us.

Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses)

This technique teaches us the way to journey inward and find ultimate peacefulness.

Dharana (concentration)

When we are able to do a task and focus all of our energy on it, we’re able to perform it well and with care.

Dhyana (meditation)

Set aside time each day to invite meditation into our minds and hearts.

Samadhi (enlightenment)

Propels our spiritual journey forward and helps us to stay in the present moment indefinitely.

Strength training combined with regular yoga classes offers complementary benefits that enhance overall fitness, health, and well-being.

Physical Benefits
•Strength training builds muscle mass, increases bone density, and boosts metabolism, which helps with weight management and functional strength for daily activities. This counters age-related muscle loss effectively.
•Yoga provides flexibility, joint mobility, balance, and muscle endurance through slow, controlled poses, improving range of motion and helping prevent injuries during strength training.
•Together, they create a balanced workout routine where strength training boosts power and muscle, and yoga maintains and improves flexibility and balance, reducing injury risk.

Mental and Functional Benefits
•Yoga improves breathing techniques, reduces stress and anxiety, and enhances mental focus, which can support better strength training performance and recovery.
•Strength training helps with mental energy, focus, and can develop controlled aggression, creating a healthy emotional balance when paired with the calming effects of yoga .
•Combining both promotes better posture, improved coordination, and supports independence as one ages by reducing the risk of falls and strains.

Interaction Advantages
•Strength training can correct muscular imbalances that may arise from only practicing yoga, while yoga enhances mobility that allows better and safer strength training performance.
•Increased muscle strength from weight training enables holding more advanced yoga poses and reduces the chance of strains or pulls during practice.

Combining strength training with regular yoga provides a well-rounded fitness regimen addressing strength, flexibility, mental health, and injury prevention, each amplifying the benefits of the other for optimal physical and mental wellness.

Yoga Will Challenge Your Mind and Body.

What Is Our Brand of Yoga?

At our studio, we practice predominantly Raja yoga, which has an emphasis on physical postures. We include mindfulness techniques in all our yoga classes and even in our non-yoga offerings. Our classes are not heated, but we keep the room at an optimal temperature to support muscles in loosening and lengthening. The four main styles of yoga asana you can practice with us include Hatha-Vinyasa, Restorative, Yin, and prenatal yoga. Any class that has “flow” in the title follows the Hatha-Vinyasa style, which ranges from slow and gentle movement to more fast-paced and energizing movement. You will always be warmed up and cooled down, closing practice with a few minutes of rest, traditionally in savasana, or in English, corpse pose.
